Keeping your PC healthy is just like keeping your body healthy and free from viruses, bacteria and pollution. |
|
|
Software Side |
- Always use an anti-virus program to keep your pc from
viruses and other malicious scripts.
- Always run your anti-virus program every week.
- Do not install "unknown" programs. It may harm
your system or even damage it permanently.
- Before installing a program, read first its accompanied
technical support files or go to its website if there are
known compatibility issues with other programs.
- Avoid installing pre-released or "beta" programs
if you're system is not configured for testing. A beta
program is not a full featured application that is intended
only for testing and troubleshooting.
- Defrag your PC every month, not every week, to make your
frequently used programs run faster.
- Use Scandisk every week to check your hard drive for
errors or even before running Disk Defragmenter.
- Make it a habit to make a full backup of your system, so
that when it crash you can go back to the time when it is
running smoothly. Windows Millennium Edition and Windows XP has
a system restore built-in. If you don't have Windows ME or
XP, Roxio's
GoBack and Easy CD Creator is the best for this job.
- For backing up all your files, either use Windows'
built-in backup tools or use a third-party utility for
making a drive image.
- Remove programs that you don't frequently use so that you
can gain more of your hard drive's space. But make sure
that you have its installer either on disks or network.
- Apply updates if necessary. Updates are patches or
security fixes that a software manufacturer provides
for free to make their programs more reliable to use. Before
applying any updates, please read its accompanied
support papers so that you will know if your system needs it
or not.
- Update your anti-virus software definitions regularly.
Antivirus programs frequently release "free" virus
definition updates for their products. Check your antivirus
program for more details.

Hardware Side |
- Clean your PC once in a while. Dusts or even spider
webs may cause your PC's performance and shorten its
life.
- Take an extra care on cleaning your mouse's ball. Don't
squeeze it!
- If you're having trouble opening its casing, see its
manual or ask for technical assistance from its
manufacturer or dealer.
- Adding more heat sinks and fans in your PC will decrease
the chance of overheating.
- If you're planning to go for a break, turn off your
computer. It will help you a lot on electricity bills.
- Turn off your PC when there is
a storm. Lightning surges may damage your PC. Surge
protectors can be used at this situation.
