Surf N' E-mail
Keep your PC and your identity safe when surfing the Internet and managing electronic mails.

Safe Surfing
  • Make sure that your anti-virus program is enabled before surfing the 'Net to stop viruses, trojans and other malicious codes from sneaking your computer.
  • Use a firewall to block hackers. It may even speed up your 'Net traffic because it controls what programs will be allowed to connect.
    More about firewalls.
  • When you create passwords, try to use alpha-numeric characters with at least 6 characters.
  • Do not give your passwords.
  • You will know if a website is secure if you see a pad lock icon below the  status bar of Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  • If you transact confidential matters like processing your bank accounts or buying online, make sure that your browser uses 128-bit encryption or cipher strength. To see if your browser uses 128-bit encryption, go to Help> About section of your browsers menu.
  • Take an extra care on buying online. Some online stores and auction sites may have "bogus" prices and services that seems to good to be true. Shop smartly.
  • Be sure to log-off properly if you're leaving a secured site.
  • If you give your kids access online, be sure to turn on your browser's "Parental Control" option to keep them away from adult sites.
E-mail Basics
  • Do not open e-mails from senders that you're not familiar with.
  • Do not open e-mails with "bogus" subjects.
  • Always use filters to avoid junk e-mails and unwanted mails.
  • Caution on opening an attachment specially if you don't know or not familiar with the name of the sender. Attachments if opened, may have malicious codes like viruses. So make sure that your anti-virus program is running (and also up to date) when you are receiving and/or sending e-mails from your web mail server and when you're opening an attachment.
  • Do not open attachments especially if it has a .VBS and .EXE filename extensions.
  • Use message rules to organize your e-mails.
  • It is recommended to create another e-mail account so that your primary e-mail will be used for personal transactions.
  • Sending an e-mail is just like sending an ordinary mail. Before sending your e-mail, be sure to check its spelling and grammar so that it is readable and easy to understand.
